Eddie Carbone, a Brooklyn longshoreman is unhappily married to Beatrice and unconsciously in love with Catherine, the niece that they need raised from childhood. Into his house come back 2 brothers, illegal immigrants, Marco and Rodolpho. Catherine falls in love with Rudolpho; and Eddie, tormented however unable to admit even to himself his quasi-incestuous love, reports the illegal immigrants to the authorities.

All the most characters live in a very tiny and squalid apartment, the proper setting for the pent up lust and anger that fuels the actions of the characters. The additional Carbone lusts for the lady, the additional he despises the young Italian and his "foreign" ways in which, hinting at his homosexuality as a result of he's blond and likes to sing.
Vallone is excellent because the volatile and treacherous Eddie Carbone who finally is consumed by his raging passions. Stapleton is solid because the aggrieved wife who remains loyal when she slowly begins to grasp her husband's actions. Jean Sorel is terrific because the young Italian as is Raymond Pellegrin as his older brother.
The real surprise here is Carol Lawrence as young Catherine. usually thought of a musical performer (WEST aspect STORY), she turns in a tremendous performance the innocent lady who finally comes aged.
Co-stars embody Morris Carnovsky because the compassionate lawyer, Vincent Gardenia because the grocer, Harvey Lembeck, Frank Campanella, and Mickey Knox as co-workers.
