This play by Arthur Miller was filmed by Sidney Lumet in France, however why? Lumet brings us the gritty and dark world of immigrant longshoreman Eddie Carbone (Raf Vallone) and his family ... wife Maureen Stapleton and her niece Carol Lawrence. Carbone is concerned in illegally bringing 2 Italians (cousins of Stapleton) into the US and obtaining them jobs on the wharfs of latest York town. however one thing goes terribly wrong when the younger man (Jean Sorel) starts to induce concerned with Lawrence and Carbone's jealousy and lust for the lady return to the surface.

All the most characters live in a very tiny and squalid apartment, the proper setting for the pent up lust and anger that fuels the actions of the characters. The additional Carbone lusts for the lady, the additional he despises the young Italian and his "foreign" ways in which, hinting at his homosexuality as a result of he's blond and likes to sing.

Vallone is excellent because the volatile and treacherous Eddie Carbone who finally is consumed by his raging passions. Stapleton is solid because the aggrieved wife who remains loyal when she slowly begins to grasp her husband's actions. Jean Sorel is terrific because the young Italian as is Raymond Pellegrin as his older brother.

The real surprise here is Carol Lawrence as young Catherine. usually thought of a musical performer (WEST aspect STORY), she turns in a tremendous performance the innocent lady who finally comes aged.
